Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) at Lakehead

WIL at LU’s core goal is to ensure that our business students are “work-place ready” upon graduation. Powered by RBC Future Launch, we offer a suite of experiential learning opportunities designed to meet the needs of students, faculty, businesses and the communities we serve.

WIL at LU's top business students are available for Part-time Field Placements

Student Prerequisites:

  • Successful completion of second-year of the Honours Bachelor of Commerce or Business Administration program and have declared a major.
  • Must be a full-time student in good academic standing in the Faculty of Business Administration or a full-time student in another faculty enrolled in a Faculty of Business Administration certificate program.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Deliverables are negotiated between the organization, WIL at LU and the student(s). Deliverables are customized based on the Field Placement or project goals proposed by the employer and the learning goals of the student.

WIL Part-time Field Placement Credit Course - unpaid

  • This course provides a supervised Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Placement in an approved organizational setting that gives students extended opportunities to apply classroom-based learning in a real-world setting. Combined with critical reflection, a series of integrative foundational skills workshops enables the development of work-readiness and allows students to integrate theory and practice. Students will dedicate the equivalent of 1 day per week over two semesters for a total 192 hours.
  • Placements run September thru March

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

To support, in conjunction with the Experiential Learning Navigator and the student, the development of the Learning Plan and ensure that the learning plan is realistic, appropriate and within the scope of the placement.

To ensure that assessments of student performance are completed and submitted to the Experiential Learning Navigator at the mid-term and end-term of the placement. 

To participate in discussion and feedback at the request of the student and/or the Experiential Learning Navigator.

To contact the Experiential Learning Navigator as soon as possible when it is determined that long term illness or any other significant absence may cause placement interruption.

To contact the Experiential Learning Navigator as soon as possible when concerns develop that may result in changes in the nature and flow of learning opportunities within the organization.

To define any specific criteria related to acceptance of a student (i.e. health requirements, records check).

To facilitate student participation in the organization and its structure. This includes providing opportunities for students to meet and familiarize themselves with staff members and their work, including policies and procedures. Students can benefit greatly through student participation in organization committee work and attendance at staff meetings.

To sign and follow an agreement that defines the roles and responsibilities of the Faculty of Business Administration, the placement organization and the student.

To recognize that the WIL at LU Field Placement has educational components that require the time of staff members. Supervisors and mentors will need adequate time to prepare for the student's arrival, to develop orientation plans, and to establish regular supervisory meeting for students.
