The students will work on a collaborative group or individual project that enables them to: Gain an understanding of all aspects of a live business problem and the experience of formulating it into a problem that can be addressed using analytical approaches. Acquire hands-on familiarity with applying the basic techniques of data extraction, transformation, and preparation, as applied to big data in the context of a live business problem. Acquire experience choosing and using analytical and visualization techniques and appropriate software to solve a live business problem. Communicate using visualization tools the business problem that is being addressed through the data mining technique, its results, and its implications, including any ethical implications. Acquire a strong understanding of data strategy and governance in a company and how it is communicated and implemented through the organization structure.

Business Analytics Practicum - Spring 2025

Beginning in January 2025, student consultants from the Master of Science in Business Analytics program will work with your organization to identify and formulate a business problem that can be addressed using the analytical approaches that have been covered in this degree program. This course is designed to provide an experiential opportunity for the students to apply their Business Analytics skills in solving a real business problem. In this course, students will work on a collaborative group or individual project that addresses, ideally, a live business problem using the analytical techniques learned in the other courses comprising this major. Students will clearly articulate the business problem and the goals of their chosen analytical approach. They will have access to realistically big data and an opportunity to appreciate, through an application, the possibilities and limitations of these analytical techniques. Students will be placed in companies and expected to understand and communicate the business implications of their analysis to interested stakeholders. Companies are welcome to take on more than one student team.

The project requires students to do a narrative business plan and create integrated financial statements over three years. These documents are are exported and shared with the client. All materials are confidential. Learners will work on one main project over the experience of the semester, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools. The professor will mentor student teams.
