Details

This project is designed to provide you with hands-on experience in organizing digital files according to industry standards. If you are considering a career in architecture, city code enforcement, building inspection, or a variety of engineering disciplines, this project will give you valuable insight into the real-world practices of organizing files for civil, commercial, or large residential projects. And show you real-world application on how we organize projects from the contract stage up to completion .

Deliverables

Your task is to sort, rename, and organize various types of digital files—including audio, video, images, and text—using MasterFormat naming conventions. The goal is to ensure that these files are easily accessible and correctly categorized for future use by students who will work with this media.

The project requires a quick mind and fast fingers on the keyboard and the ability to watch short clips or analyse images while naming them properly based on the MasterFormat Canadian code list.

Project Duration:

The project will require a significant time investment, during which you will develop your organizational and problem-solving skills.

Deliverables:

  1. File Sorting: You will be responsible for sorting a large number of files, including audio clips, video snippets, images, and text documents. Each file must be accurately categorized and placed in the appropriate folder.
  2. Google Drive Navigation: You will organize the files within our private Google Drive. This will require you to navigate the drive effectively, creating a logical folder structure and ensuring that all files are correctly stored.
  3. Problem-Solving: You may encounter challenges during the organization process, such as mislabeled files or access issues. Your ability to solve these problems efficiently will be essential. Support will be available to assist you with any difficulties.
  4. File Naming: You will be required to rename 400 files according to the MasterFormat Canadian code list. Accuracy and consistency in naming are critical to ensure that the files are easily identifiable.

Qualifications: No prior experience is required. However, you should possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to type efficiently. Familiarity with Google Drive and basic problem-solving abilities will also be beneficial. We are open to make this a little easier for you by installing all of the videos in easily identifiable folders based on their content and how it relates to the building process outlined in the video.

To tackle the file organization project described, students would benefit from the following skills:

Attention to Detail: The ability to meticulously sort through various types of files and discern their unique characteristics and categories.

Organizational Skills: Proficiency in creating logical and efficient folder structures to house the sorted files, ensuring easy access and navigation.

Problem-Solving Abilities: Capacity to overcome challenges that may arise during the organization process, such as identifying mislabeled files or resolving access issues within Google Drive.

Familiarity with Google Drive: Competence in navigating Google Drive's interface, including creating folders, moving files, and managing permissions, to effectively carry out the organizational tasks.

Communication Skills: Capability to reach out for assistance when encountering difficulties, whether through written communication within the project platform or seeking help from peers or instructors.

Creativity: Willingness to approach file naming and organization with creativity and innovation, infusing personality and clarity into the process.

Time Management: Ability to allocate time effectively throughout the 60-hour project duration to complete tasks within deadlines and make steady progress towards the final deliverables.

Keyboard Proficiency: Comfortable typing speed and accuracy to efficiently rename a large volume of files, ensuring consistency and coherence in file names.

Adaptability: Readiness to adapt to evolving project requirements or unexpected challenges, remaining flexible and resilient throughout the process.

By embodying these skills, students can embark on the digital adventure of file organization with confidence and enthusiasm, transforming chaos into order one file at a time.
