Learner goals and capabilities

The Department of World Languages and Cultures strives to educate students to become engaged citizens who are committed to advancing social sustainability and justice with communities at all levels, from local to global. Through an interdisciplinary approach, students embrace the rich linguistic and cultural diversity found in the French-speaking world by developing knowledge, skills, and attitudes that allow them to effectively develop human relationships that foster intercultural communicative competence and citizenship.

Students who take this class come from a variety of different majors and therefore come with a variety of different skills that we can use to enhance your company and fulfill your needs. They have been working on a professional portfolio.

Below are our course goals:

1.     COMMUNICATION: Communicate in the target language effectively to develop relationships that foster intercultural communicative competence and citizenship.

2.     CULTURES: Embrace the rich cultural diversity of the Francophone world by using the language(s) to engage with others and a variety of topics with intercultural communicative competence.

3.     CONNECTIONS: Develop an interdisciplinary interpretation of linguistic and cultural content to use the language to function in academic and career-related situations.

4.     COMPARISONS: Understand and value similarities and differences between their own language and culture and the products, practices, and perspectives of the target language and culture.

5.     COMMUNITIES: Develop a deep understanding of social issues and challenges that affect their communities and advance change. Students will be able to use the target language to participate in workplace-related communities at home and around the world

Student learning outcomes:

At the end of our course, students will be able to:

1.     Communicate using the three modes of communication (interpretive, presentational, interpersonal) in French at the level of Novice High according to the World-Readiness Standards.

3.     Connect and interpret cultural and linguistic content related to everyday activities and personal and professional life from interdisciplinary perspectives.

4.     Understand and value similarities and differences between languages and cultures by comparing the products, practices, and perspectives of the target language and culture to their personal and professional environment.

5.     Contribute to creating a community of learning in the classroom and deepen their understanding and appreciation of other communities at home and beyond.

Project Examples

Students are able to write basic French, such as emails, chats, and other basic tasks specific to a work environment. They can understand and interpret straightforward French on a variety of familiar topics (oral and written). They can translate on basic topics, such as translating a menu or a social media post.

We have mostly traditionally-aged College students and are located in northern Minnesota. Students have learned about French-speaking cultures around the world. We have access to other college students (demographics 18 - 22) that we could use to test your project.

Our course emphasizes intercultural communicative competence. Our students learn how to navigate different cultures and use that knowledge in a variety of situations. They can help your company enter a new market, doing research and presenting on the culture in that area.
